MA TESL FAQs

How can I tell if Penn State is for me?
The M.A. TESL at Penn State is aimed at providing a theory-driven, reflective, professional approach to language education and is designed for individuals who wish to pursue a career in language education, either as teachers, coordinators or administrators of ESL or EFL programs.
What if I want to pursue a career in teaching a language other than English?
The majority of students in our program are interested in teaching English. However, students interested in teaching languages other than English have also been enrolled. These individuals have supplemented their course work in the MA/TESL with courses from the dedicated language departments at Penn State.
Do I need to have a bachelor's degree in linguistics or applied linguistics to apply for the MA/TESL?
No. Applicants to the program come with a variety of majors.
If I am accepted for the M.A. TESL, may I take courses in other departments as well?
Yes. We encourage students to make use of whatever resources the university offers that help them in their chosen field of study within applied linguistics. In every case, decisions about crafting a program of study are made jointly by the student and his or her advisor.
Are my GRE scores the only thing that the admissions committee considers?
In our admissions process, we attend to the entire picture generated by an applicant's record of achievements, personal narrative, letters of recommendation, writing samples, and scores on the GRE.
What are the minimum GRE scores necessary for admission?
Given that we emphasize the entire application package and not just standardized scores, we do not have minimum acceptable scores for the M.A. TESL.
What are the minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores for admission?
International students may take either the TOEFL or the IELTS. The minimum requirements for the TOEFL are 600 on the paper test, 250 on the computer-based test, and 100 on the internet-based test, with a minimum score of 23 on the speaking section. Applicants taking the IELTS must score at least 7.0.
What is usually included in letters of recommendation?
We ask that you have 3 letters of recommendation sent by individuals who are familiar with your academic and/or professional work. Usually such letters indicate how long and in what capacity the recommender knows you, his or her opinion of your academic and professional work, and some estimation of your capacity as a graduate student.
Whom should I contact to see if my application materials arrived?
Please direct queries about your application to the departmental administrative assistant, Sally Arnold (sah4@psu.edu).
When will I find out if I am accepted?
We make decisions about M.A. TESL applicants as the applications arrive. You should hear about your acceptance within 6 weeks of application.
When will I find out about funding?
Funding decisions are made separately from admissions decisions, and funding decisions are made once a year towards the end of March. You should receive news about funding in early April. Please note that there is no funding available for students who apply for and begin in the spring semesters. However, such individuals may apply for funding for the following academic year.
What is included in funding?
Students who are funded receive a grant-in-aid that covers tuition costs, health insurance, and a stipend. The amount of the stipend is calculated by the Graduate School each year.
What are the application deadlines?
You may apply at any time. However, if you are an international student, you must apply by October 1 to be admitted for the spring semester, or by April 1 for the following fall semester. This time is required for the processing of your international status.
Does the M.A. TESL give me certification to teach in public schools in the U.S.?
No. Each state has its own requirements for the certification of ESL instructors. This information can usually be found in each state’s Department of Education. It is your responsibility to check on and fulfill these requirements.
